Today’s song is “My Girl” by Freddie Nelson. The Pittsburgh, PA native is a skilled guitarist, singer, songwriter, and producer. Nelson first came to international attention in 2010 when he collaborated with guitar virtuoso Paul Gilbert (Mr. Big) on their album, United States. Together they wrote, performed, and produced the recording that was released on Mascot Records and toured Japan and Europe shortly after.
This song is off his debut solo release entitled Shake The Cage out now. All of the writing and producing was done by Nelson as well all of the musical & vocal performances, with the exception of drums performed by the legendary Thomas Lang (who has played with Peter Gabriel, Kelly Clarkson, John Wetton and countless others).
When explaining the name of the album, Nelson says, “The record is called Shake The Cage, because I feel that a lot of music has become one dimensional with tools such as pitch correction and formulated songwriting. There is no substitute for hard work and honing your craft, and it’s time to challenge mediocrity.”
And that he definitely does in this song and on the album. Listening to the record I had a hard time picking a song to feature as each of them were equally great! His polished and well produced sound is only surpassed by his enticing vocals and inviting guitar riffs. This song has a strong rock sound that features elements of punk, pop, and blues for a fierce fusion that will appeal to fans of artists like Queen, Muse, My Chemical Romance, The Killers, and the Beatles.
