March 3, 2010 marked my second time in the audience of a late night show and the first time at Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The studio is located in Rockefeller Center in NYC. Little did I know I would have the opportunity to get close with the R&B guest band, Grammy winning, Erykah Badu. Upon checking into the show a “Jimmy Fallon” worker asked my friend and I if we wanted to upgrade our tickets to the band stage seats. I was not that familiar with Erykah Badu, but as a music fan I welcomed the chance and jumped on the opportunity.
After Jimmy Fallon concluded his monologue, he interviewed the fabulous Barbara Walters who sadly announced this would be her last year covering the Oscars after 29 years of interviewing the nominated celebrities. The show cut to a commercial break and then it was time for the performance. Erykah Badu jumped on the stage with The Roots, the house band, to perform a short song with them. It was amazing for a artist to appear on a late night show prior to their performance Jimmy Fallon! Two members of the Roots contributed to her new album and they have been friends for a long time. I’m sure it was a treat for all of them to be on stage together.
Jimmy Fallon then interviewed the talented Regina King for her past role in the TV show 247 and her most recent roles in Family Wedding and the TNT show Southland. Finally Erykah Badu, who’s prepping for the release of New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh which launches in stores on March 30th was up next. The crew directed the band stage audience members onto the stage and placed us all around where the band was going to perform. She hit the stage debuting her new song, “Window Seat”. As Erykah Badu performed her song I was dancing right behind her and her band on a raised platform. This made the day just perfect. The song has a soulful vibe that got everyone in her musical groove.
