Music to Get You Off Your A.S.S. from Feb. 19-25

Strong opinions on the music you are, or should be listening to.

Albums
Cali Swag DistrictThe Kickback
Early success of a single can be both a blessing and a curse, sure “Teach Me How to Dougie” was huge, but that was a long time ago. People have already bought the single and CSD are not the type of group that can rely on their secondary songs, trust me.

GinuwineElgin
It’s hard to believe that Ginuwine is still around, the last time he was popular Lil’ Wayne was still singing backup verses for Mannie Fresh. I doubt that he’ll be around for long as the R&B genre has greatly evolved over the years without the once superstar.

Sonic YouthSimon Werner a Disparu
At some point it became cool to hate Sonic Youth fans, mostly because they were a bunch of hipsters who thought they knew ‘real’ music. As for the band themselves their music can sound a little noisy, and not so instrumental, but the group has grown into at least a somewhat decent band.

Various Artists – NOW That’s What I Call Music, Vol. 37
How sweet would it be if we could make CDs with all the big songs on it? This is the thought process behind the ‘Now’ series, but in an era that is past burned CDs even and moved into the easily customizable music download era why do they still make these discs.

Songs
The ThermalsNot Like Any Other Feeling
“Now We Can See” is a top quality alt-rock, this showing by The Thermals is sadly not nearly up to that level. It really seems like the band didn’t feel like performing a song, but were forced to because of their contract, real uninspiring stuff, but maybe I’m wrong, it’s not like it’s an hour long song.

YC featuring Future“Racks”
When Soulja Boi first became popular those defending him claimed it was “just southern dance music,” so many years later we are left with “Racks.” What this song is exactly about I have no idea, what are “racks on racks?” All of that aside, the song is actually pretty catchy, as long as you don’t really think of music as an art form.

Lady Gaga“Born This Way”
I’m about to commit current pop music blasphemy by saying that I think Lady Gaga is done, her ship has sailed and this song is proof. This song doesn’t have the pop that past songs have had and at some point people will get tired of her music videos, by the way watches music videos anyway?

Saigon“The Greatest Story Never Told”
Ah the days when Saigon first came onto the scene, Entourage was still good and funny, and Saigon was an aspiring rapper. While he may have not gained the acclaim he may deserve this single proves that he still has the talent as he goes with a Ghostface Killah sound on this track.

Shows
Sunday the 20th:
GWAR at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, N.Y. at 6:30 p.m.
The fact that GWAR is still playing shows is proof of how dead the metal genre really is. The so-called “gore band” that is known for their fake blood drenched shows can’t even make it to the 7 o’ clock time slot, probably because they’re all in their 60’s.

Tuesday the 22nd:
Plain White T’s at HighLine Ballroom in N.Y. at 7:30 p.m.
Not everyone can pull of the mushy love song thing as their band’s main attraction, the Plain White T’s have done it well though. It may be a week after Valentine’s Day, but in case things didn’t go so great last Monday take her to this show to smooth things over.

Max Bemis (Say Anything) with River City Extension at The Studio at Webster Hall in N.Y. at 7:30 p.m.
If my name was Max Bemis then I would probably be a little crazy too, Mr. Bemis however, is very crazy and luckily also very talented. It is because of this talent that any musical show involving the Say Anything front man deserves some sort of viewing.

Lady Gaga at Madison Square Garden in N.Y. at 8 p.m.
To further my tangent on the musical demise of Lady Gaga I’ve got to point out that the stunts are getting old. A meat dress is certainly ridiculous but I get it, showing up to the biggest music awards ceremony in a gigantic egg is stupid, even the Easter bunny doesn’t do that shit.
